Island Life
My column writing began with an unintended article in The Scotsman newspaper about my move to Orkney, which led to ‘Island Life’ – a series of weekly articles in their Saturday magazine – which ran for six years.
I subsequently produced two illustrated books: Fine That and Dead Right, containing the first four years of my column. Nae Worries is the final two years, which never quite made it into book form.
Six years x a weekly column is a helluva lot of words to sort and put here: I’ve begun with the first five articles in Fine That, and I’ll (try to) put up another one every week-ish. So depending when you are reading this, you’ll see a certain number of articles and a balancing volume of emptiness. Keep the faith – and send me a nudge if nothing’s been added for a while!
Island to Island
A few years ago (time is elastic and to some extent irrelevant) my brother Jamie and I realised that we were both living on islands of roughly the same size (space is also quite elastic), but of a very different nature. I’ll let you discover them.
This is a series of letters between us. It’s not that long, and it’s in letter form – casual and unedited. We intend to keep it up (but intentions are…also elastic).
Island Makers
This is my new project, about which I’m positively ebullient. Yup, you’ll find white space in there at the moment, as the project is at the planning stage for 2021 (finally, a proper date for you, albeit safely in the future, that most elastic of elastic time frames…)
To find out what it is though, please visit Island Makers
